Definition of a Mutant
A mutant is a mix of classes from different races that can only be created by adding Dragon-Network Subclass to a Retail Subclass. Since mutants aren't officially tested, some class combinations may be bugged or result in unpredicted errors. However I try to cover the bug/error section with as much knowledge/experience as possible.
Basics
DN Subclass: Limited to the race of your main class (you can only choose a class from the race you started your char with). Can be taken only once.
Retail subclass: Can be taken 3 times. You can choose almost any class of any race, but:
1. Dark Elves can't take Elf classes and viceversa... read again: no, they can't... EVER!
2. You can't retail sub to OL, so if you want an OL mutant, start with Orc as main class.
3. You can't retail sub to the same type of class you already are (HE cant retail to SR or PR for example)
Creating a mutant
Basically... if you want to make a HE/BD for example this is what you would do:
I. Human Appearance
- Start human character (any class*, doesn't matter. Let's take sorc for this example)
- Level to 75
- Do retail quest ---> BD
- Level BD to 76
- Take Horn
- Stay as BD class, add DN Subclass to HE
- Done
II. Dark Elven Appearance
- Start dark elven character (any class*, doesn't matter. Let's take AW for this example)
- Level to 75
- Do retail quest ---> HE
- Level HE to 76
- Take Horn
- Stay as HE class, add DN subclass to BD
- Done
(*) Usually it's better to follow the examples above and start with a class different from the class you eventually want to dn-sub to:
Good example: Spellhowler --RETAIL--> Treasure Hunter -- DN subclass --> Shillien Knight (TH/SK)
Bad example: Shillien Knight --RETAIL--> Treasure Hunter -- DN subclass --> Shillien Knight (TH/SK too, but might be bugged and if you don't do it right you could end up without 3rd class skills. Read more about this issue in the section below.)
Things to keep in mind when making a mutant
When making a mutant it is wise NOT to start a char with the class you want to eventually DN subclass to (because it could be bugged for some people/classes). IF you happened to create a char that way anyways it is IMPERATIVE that you DON'T do 3rd job transfer quest before you apply DN subclass. And here is why:
You cannot, under any circumstances, do 3rd job transfer quest twice for the same class on the same char. So if you plan on DN-subbing back to your main class make sure you do 3rd job transfer quest AFTER you DN-subbed or your char will be bugged/not get 3rd class skills. Note: This only concerns your main class and your dn sub. You can do 3rd job transfer for your retail class at any given time.
Good example:
Bladedancer --RETAIL--> Hawk Eye/Saggitarius -- DN subclass --> Bladedancer --3rd class--> Spectral Dancer (3rd class skills)
Bad example: Bladedancer --3rd class--> Spectral Dancer --RETAIL--> Hawk Eye/Saggitarius -- DN subclass --> Bladedancer --3rd job transfer quest not possible--> grats, you just wasted a lot of time and adena. Reroll!
NOTE: After you created your mutant DO NOT try to remove its retail class or (in case of Mainclass=DNsubclass) switch back to your old main class. Doing so could and probably WILL completely screw up your char. If you wanna ADD another retail class to your mutant, change from DN_Sub to retail (Sir Eric Rodemai) and from retail back to your main class (Temples,Guilds) BEFORE you add a 2nd/3rd retail class or you might end up with a bugged char.
Thanks
At this point I'd like to thank all the brave mutant-pioneers who went to create a super-pwnage-mutant just to find out it is bugged because something went utterly wrong. Without your wasted time, mistakes and sacrifices the creation of this guide would not have been possible. May your pwnage chars that never saw the fun of mass pvp rest in peace. :D
Best regards,
Smitemeister
